About

Officially launched Feb, 2014, this site is the headquarters for an organization aimed at preserving and promoting the works of the late Canadian folk music icon, Willie P. Bennett.  The concept is this: provide a forum to celebrate Bennett's songwriting legacy by hosting a free access database of his songs, as recorded by other musicians.  Bennett's songs and musicianship were profoundly influential on generations of folk and roots musicians.  The purpose of the project is to rediscover a monumental body of work, a timeless artistry, and ensure its survival for generations.  Engaging the young, modern, independent folk musician may enable Willie P. Bennett's legacy to remain relevant well into the future, while also contributing to a stronger, more well informed and educated community of Canadian musicians.

Willie P Bennett Memorial Award

An open discussion to present ideas about how to administer the annual Willie P Bennett Memorial Award for young artists. Tell us your thoughts on: age elegibility? What should we look for in a young artist? Should we require acts to submit a recording of a WPB song? What constitutes "espousing WPB's musical, professional and aesthetic values? This site is such a great thing. I am beyond honoured to be included here. One of the highlights of my musical career for certain. I think about willie often while traveling and his music has been a huge influence on my everyday life. Way to go jaxon and everyone involved. This whole thing makes me so happy. I'll be doing some willie tunes tonight and thinking of you all. Big love.

Had the pleasure of seeing Willie (and Fred) many times in the past decade. Always a gentleman to speak with. I wish that his music could be available again for purchase/download. I miss his presence a great deal.

Love all of Willie's music but think that Azure is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard. Feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to meet him.

I forgot to mention earlier. My friend Denise Williams who posted below and I have a ritual we do which honours Willie's memory. I was playing her house concert the night we all found that Willie had passed and she and their sound person Ramcey didn't tell me that night because they knew how much it would have affected me. Anyway, when you drive between Nashville and Knoxville, TN you pass the Caney Fork River about 4 times in the space of about a mile. Whenever one of us makes that drive we always call the other and sing the chorus of that song. Yesterday we went to a jam at our friend Kris and Dale Ballinger's place. They live on an hour just before Knoxville and on the way there and back home yesterday we sang that song...together this time. Caney Fork River, Caney Fork River...there are more stories too...will post another time. Willie We Miss Ya!

Willie kindly agreed to come down to Windsor and perform at the Stag & Doe party for my fiancée (now wife) Gail and me in 1978. "Lace and Pretty Flowers" was the second song the DJ spun at our wedding reception. Willie got a little over-refreshed at our party, but that is a whole other story! :-) His music will live on forever. Rest in peace, Willie.

I am truly honored, and very humbled to be asked to be part of this project for our friend WPB. Willie was a true man first. His music spoke his truth. That is how he loved us and communicated with us; by giving us his raw and tender heart. His songs are honest and full of truth. He never held anything back. He gave everything he had. I consider myself very blessed to have been his friend and musical accomplice for many years. Not a day goes by when I don't think of Willie. I always ask myself; what would Willie do? Thank you Jaxon and everyone involved in this project. Willie and his music need to be heard and shared. He was always about that. I know he is smiling and with us on this. I found it very easy to invoke his spirit when I recorded Come On Train. Willie taught me how to sing. He taught me how to open my mouth and speak clearly. And he showed up for the session, and taught me again...
